O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement for her performance. O'Neil was praised by the jury. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he never fell into the third place. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
